Horns and Devils (2009)
Location
ESA Tourcoing
In 2009, Éric Harasym, Territorial Library Curator at the École Supérieure d’Art de Tourcoing, invited me to reflect on the representation of the devil to accompany an exhibition of incunabula devoted to this theme. I quickly realised that the undertaking was far from trivial. According to certain beliefs of First Peoples, to represent something, even an idea is to evoke it, if not to summon it. Out of both caution and a desire for collaboration, I invited the artist Fred Martin to join me in this work. His materials, gathered over the course of his travels in India and Africa, mingled with mine and those of the art school to bring these images into being. Our shared seal, placed before each portal, was intended to keep at bay the entities thus conjured.
